Apple is facing challenges in releasing its AI model in China. The AI model is called Apple Intelligence and Apple might make a delay on the release because of some issues in the roll out.

The Chinese officials have brought out a lengthy process for approval to the foreign companies if the company does not partner with local companies of China. So it is interesting to know what Apple’s take on this would be.

In this blog we would be talking about Apple’s AI Strategy for iPhones in China and how it is a long and difficult road for it.

Apple’s AI Strategy for iPhones in China

Apple had rolled out some AI features in iPhones and other devices in the US. It also aims at introducing its LLMs in China.

Apple has been working to give an upgrade of Apple Intelligence to its users which would give access to new features on the iPhone new models.

Apple’s features in the US are Siri, writing aids , photo editing and custom emojis with a mix of on-device processing and Apple’s Cloud servers. Apple has taken up large models in OpenAI to deal with complicated questions.

It is clear that if Apple won’t be using its own LLMs then it would have to rely on the Chinese partners to get the AI features that would be used in China.

Regulatory and Geopolitical Challenges

Tim Cook visited China as it being his third arrival this year where he tried to understand the complex process foreign companies have to go by and how they can introduce Apple Intelligence in China to its users.

But according to Chinese regulators foreign companies have to face the long procedure to introduce their models if they are not partnering with the local companies of the country.

This is a clear indication that Chinese regulators want foreign companies  to take up the already present LLMs from Chinese groups.

One of the biggest competitors for Apple in China remains Huawei that has already introduced its generative AI in the device. Apple has been in discussions with Baidu, ByteDance and Moonshot for a tie up.

China has been a big market for Apple with a 17 percent share but the sales went down by 8 percent from previous year making it a concern for Apple’s market presence in China.

This can also be a result of the campaign to cut down the iPhone use among the Chinese due to the US and China’s not so good relationships.

Conclusion

Overall Apple is set to bring new features to Chinese users through Apple Intelligence which might take some time. It is expected to be seen by the end of 2025 or may extend further looking at the current position.

The regulatory process of China does not appear transparent for foreign companies, rather simply lengthy and complex if not working with the local companies.

Apple is most likely to partner with Baidu or other small companies in China as it will get them an easy approval and less delay.
