As we all know, Google recently launched its artificial technology, Gemini AI Assistant, and now in support of this, Google launched the Android XR operating system, which is designed for extended reality devices, i.e., XR.
This will allow Android users to experience features such as a range of apps, including Photos, Maps, YouTube, etc., thus making them more impressive and innovative.
In this blog, we will cover complete details regarding the Google-launched Android XR operating system and its other specifications and how one can use it in an efficient way.
What is Android XR?
Android XR is an extended reality operating system that is developed by Google, and it is based on Android. It was first announced in December 2024 but not yet launched. It is designed for the support of Gemini generative artificial intelligence, which is a powered chatbot.

This “XR” term here is dedicated to augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). This project by Google came up after a decade of failure in this extended reality world.
History
There are many failures behind this successful project. Let’s talk about those failures that brought this success.
Back in 2013, Google tried to come up with smart glasses with the name of Google Glass, but due to privacy and ethical concerns, Google had to discontinue that project.
In 2019, Google invested in AR devices. In 2020, Google again started to work on a new pair of AR smart glasses based on North designs.
In 2022, it was reported that Google was working internally on a project, Iris, for an AR headset. But for some reasons, Google cancelled this project and shifted its focus from hardware to software, and in May 2024, Google demonstrated a pair of smart glasses powered by Project Astra that uses Gemini AI, which the company claimed to launch in early 2025.
Android XR Operating System
On 12 December 2024, Google posted a new blog explaining its new launch, and it shocked the tech market. While taking the next step into the future after a decade of failure in XR, Google finally introduced its Android XR, a new operating system for the next generation of computing. It was created in collaboration with Samsung.
Google launched two new devices with extended reality, and those are headsets and glasses, to understand one’s intent and the surrounding world to help to get things done in completely new ways.
The first device that was launched with the Android XR operating system transforms how one can watch, work, and explore, and this device was by the code name “Project Moohan” and was built by Samsung.
Google is completely reimagining Google apps on these headsets, like YouTube and Google TV. After the launch of these headsets, one can watch YouTube, Google TV, and Photos on a big virtual screen in 3D and will be able to explore the world in a new manner with Google Maps in an immersive view.
Conclusion
There is a great buzz after this new announcement was unveiled that Google launched the Android XR operating system by the code name “Project Moohan” in collaboration with Samsung.
All those tech enthusiasts are just waiting for its first look, which Google claims to launch in early 2025. Stay tuned for the latest updates from Google.
