If you are looking for a branded laptop in the budget of 70k, then let me tell you that HP OmniBook 5 is here, and this laptop gives a different vibe in the budget segment. With Snapdragon X chipset, it is not only powerful but also efficient. I unboxed it, used it a bit, and now I will tell you why it can be a solid pick for students, or why not.
What do you get in the box?
As soon as you open the box, you get the feel of clean, premium packaging. Inside you get a laptop, a 65W USB-C charger, Type-C cable, SIM ejector pin, and quick start guide. The charger is small and lightweight – like a phone charger, but this one is of 65W, which is enough for a laptop. A transparent case is also provided, and a pre-applied protector is also applied on the screen. Getting all this at this price is an absolutely great deal!
Design: Lightweight and Portable
This laptop is extremely thin and light – just 1.34kg! It is extremely comfortable to hold in hands and can be carried by students. There is an aluminium chassis, which is made from recycled materials, and it feels extremely premium. There is a Gorilla Glass 3 display on the front, which protects it from scratches. The Glacier Silver color looks very sleek, and the click of the buttons is also solid.
Talking about the ports, there are two USB-C (10Gbps, DP 1.4 support) on the left side, one USB-A on the right side, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. That’s it, nothing else – the lack of an SD card slot is a big deal. There is no IP53 rating, but the build quality is so solid that there is no problem in daily use. The cooling vents are at the bottom, and the fans run only for heavy tasks, which is very quiet.
Display: 2K OLED magic
There is a 14-inch 2K OLED display, which is very shocking at this price! With 300 nits of brightness, it works well outdoors, but is a little reflective. Colours are quite vibrant, blacks are deep, and contrast is great – watching HDR content on Netflix or YouTube is a joy. With a 16:10 aspect ratio and 90%+ screen-to-body ratio, the bezels are quite thin. A 120Hz refresh rate would be even better for gaming, but for casual use, this display is top-notch. There is also Eyesafe certification, which keeps the eyes comfortable for long study sessions.
Keyboard and Trackpad: Comfortable Typing
The keyboard layout is quite natural, and the key travel is also good – perfect for typing assignments. The trackpad is big, smooth, and handles multi-touch gestures well. The only drawback? The power button blends in with the keyboard, which can get accidentally pressed at times. But overall, typing and navigation are fine.
Performance: Snapdragon X is amazing
It has the Snapdragon X Plus (8-core, 3.4GHz) chipset, which is built on a 4nm process. It is more power-efficient than Intel/AMD’s 7nm/8nm chips. If you look at AnTuTu and Geekbench scores, it can compete with mid-range Intel/AMD laptops. Daily tasks – browsing, MS Office, or light photo editing (Photoshop) – everything is absolutely smooth. For video editing, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve can also handle it, but heavy 4K projects take some time. Gaming? Light games like Minecraft or Valorant can be run on low settings, but it is not made for heavy AAA titles.
With 45 TOPS NPU, it works well in AI tasks. With the Recall feature, you can easily track your past activities (like websites or files). Live Captions gives real-time subtitles for Hindi, Tamil, or English videos. MS Paint also has a Cocreator feature, in which you can create AI images from text. Everything happens on-device, so it works even without internet. With 16GB LPDDR5x RAM and 512GB/1TB Gen4 SSD, apps open quickly, and read/write speeds are also top-class.
Battery: 34 Hours Claim, Is It Real?
HP claims 34 hours of battery life, which is a bit of a stretch. In real-world, 20-24 hours can be easily passed in mixed use (browsing, videos, light editing). In standby, this device is amazing – even after 12 hours, there was only 4-5% battery drop. 65W fast charging charges 50% in 30 minutes, which is a game-changer for students. Charged once, and can run comfortably for 2-3 days!
Audio and Camera: Average
There are dual front-firing speakers, which give clear sound, but the bass is a bit weak. Volume is also average – enough for a classroom or small room, but not for a party. The 5MP webcam is full HD, and auto-framing and noise cancellation are available in video calls along with Windows Studio Effects. There is also a physical privacy shutter, which is a thoughtful addition. Voice clarity is also good with dual mics.
Software: Windows 11 and AI Features
Windows 11 Home is pre-installed, and MS Office 2024 is also available for free (on purchase from HP website), which is a big saving for students. The HP AI Companion app analyzes files and optimizes system performance. There is no bloatware like Funtouch OS, and the UI is absolutely clean. AI features like photo enhancement and background removal also work on laptops, which is good for privacy. There is a promise of 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates, which is solid for the long-term.
Connectivity and Extras
Connectivity is quite fast with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. There is also an IR Blaster, which can control TV or AC – this is a fun feature for students. There is no fingerprint scanner, but Windows Hello face recognition is quite quick. Ports are a little less – just 2 USB-C, 1 USB-A, and headphone jack. It would have been better if there was an SD card slot or HDMI 2.1.
Price
It starts at ₹69,999 (512GB variant), and with offers you can get even less than that. The 1TB variant comes for ~₹75,000. Getting OLED display, Snapdragon X, and long battery life at this price is an absolute steal deal!
