iOS Features Coming in 2024

iOS 17 and iOS 18 are expected to have a lot of features that will be released this year, with just a few days before the end of 2024. We are excited for the release of all the new iOS features coming in 2024.

In this article we will tell you about new iOS features coming in 2024. Some of the new iOS features to expect in 2024 are- RCS support in the Messages app, generative AI for Siri, AirPlay on hotel TVs, next-generation CarPlay, collaborative Apple Music playlists, and many more.

Stolen Device Protection

According to The Wall Street Journal earlier this year, many times before stealing an iPhone thieves usually overhear owners’ passwords usually at public places like bars.

Once he knows your password the thief can take full control of your device by changing your Apple ID password, turning off Find My and more. The passcode enables one to access passwords saved in iCloud Keychain as well as other personal data.

The issue will be solved by Apple using Stolen Device Protection. Apple says this is an extra security measure if someone manages to steal your iPhone and gets a passcode with it.

If this feature is enabled, the following actions require Face ID or Touch ID authentication and no longer have a passcode fallback option
  • Using the passkeys or passwords that are saved in iCloud Keychain.
  • Looking for a virtual number of an existing Apple Card or submitting a new application.
  • To disable Lost Mode.
  • Deleting all settings and content.
  • Using the Wallet app to carry out certain transactions of Apple Cash and Apple Card Savings.
  • Using payment methods that are stored in Safari.
  • Setting up a new device with your iPhone.

The feature, along with biometric authentication, adds a one-hour security delay for particularly sensitive actions like changing the password of the Apple ID account linked to this iPhone.

The user will then need to authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID once more. However, Apple says there is no delay when iPhone is in familiar locations such as home or office.

However, when your iPhone is in familiar surroundings like at home or in the office, no delay occurs according to Apple. Activities with a one-hour security delay that require Face ID or Touch ID authentication include

  • Change your Apple ID password,
  • Password recovery protection settings (like Recovery Key)
  • Recovery Contact, Trusted Phone Number, Trusted Device.
  • Changing my iPhone passcode
  • Add or remove Touch ID / Face ID
  • Cut off Discover My Turning Off Protecting Against Stolen Devices
  • Any iPhone running iOS 17 or later can opt-in to receive Stolen Device Protection, which is an opt-in feature located in the Settings app under Face ID & Passcode. Previewing the feature is possible for iPhone users who update to the iOS 17.3 beta.

After iOS 17.3 is made generally available, Apple intends to provide more details about the feature.

Playlists for Collaboration on Apple Music

The currently released Collaborative Playlists feature allows multiple users to add, move, or delete songs from a shared playlist. You can use animated emoji reactions to annotate tracks on this playlist.

The beta testing has ended and iOS 17.2 was withdrawn as the launching platform. Apple’s website states that in 2024the feature will be right back. This is what occurred in iOS 17.3.

AirPlay on Hotel Room TVs

Apple changed its site after the release of iOS 17. 2 to say that AirPlay for hotel room TVs will not be available until 2019. Initially, Apple said it would be “coming later this year” but now it is “coming in an update in 2024.”

The company did not provide a more specific date for when the feature would be available, but it should come out sometime during H1 2019 with an iOS 17 update.

Users with iPhones can wirelessly stream music, videos and photos from their iPhone to their TV by scanning a QR code on the TV in their hotel room using this feature to establish an AirPlay connection.

Similar functionality is already available from Google on select hotel TVs, enabling visitors to stream media via Chromecast from their smartphone.

IHG Hotels & Resorts, parent company of Holiday Inn, was one of the first hotel chains to use the feature, according to a June announcement from Apple.

App Sideloading in EU

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is making preparations to allow app sideloading on the iPhone in order to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act.

This means that users will be able to install applications from other stores than Apple’s App Store; however initially only within the borders of European Union countries.

Gurman has recently released some information about iOS 17 update which is expected to roll out by mid 2024, allowing app sideloading in EU.

Next-Generation CarPlay

Apple CarPlay has already complied with its promise made in the early 2000s to disclose the first cars made for Apple next generation CarPlay system before the close of 2023 and did it with only a few days left. For example, last month, Aston Martin and Porsche previewed how the upcoming CarPlay experience would look like in their cars.

Although no date has been set yet, Aston Martin intends to launch its first cars with next-generation CarPlay in 2024 but there is little information about it now. The next generation CarPlay experience was unveiled by Apple in June 2022.
Its release promised improvements such as widgets, compatibility with multiple dashboard displays, a dedicated FM radio app and greater integration with the instrument cluster and climate controls.

The interface can be customized for each unique car model and the brand identity of the manufacturer. Last year when next-generation CarPlay was first introduced, Apple stated Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault and Volvo were among the automakers that were committed. We cannot tell if any cars have been added since then except Aston Martin.

Roadside Assistance via Satellite Outside U.S.

Every iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 model from iOS 17 onwards has roadside assistance satellite feature which can connect users to AAA for automotive help even when they are away from cellular or Wi-Fi networks in the US.

As Apple indicated “beginning” in the United States about this feature expanding to a few other countries in 2024 may be reasonable.

RCS Support

Since Apple stated in November that the iPhone’s Messages app will support the cross-platform messaging standard RCS “later next year,” the announcement suggests that the feature will probably be included in iOS 18.

The default messaging experience between iPhones and Android devices should be enhanced by RCS support in the following ways:

  • Higher-resolution photos and videos
  • Audio messages
  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • Wi-Fi messaging between iPhones and Android devices
  • Improved group chats, including the ability for iPhone users to leave a conversation that includes Android users
  • Improved encryption compared to SMS

Some of these present-day features are also found in third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, and they can already be used for iMessage conversations involving blue bubbles. Additional features will also be available to green bubbles in the Messages app when the iPhone is equipped with RCS support.

Siri is getting smarter

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a generative AI system is expect to come with iOS 18 that “should improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences.” He also said that Apple has been looking at generative AI capabilities for other apps on its platforms such as Xcode, Pages, Keynote, and Apple Music.

The Information says Apple plans to more deeply integrate the Shortcuts app into Siri by including large language models, which will allow users to automate intricate tasks. This feature will likely be part of next year’s iPhone software update- probably iOS 18 as reported.

Last year OpenAI launched ChatGPT which is a chatbot capable of responding to queries among other prompts leading to rise in popularity of generative AI. Earlier this year Google and Microsoft released similar chatbots as more companies join this market. Because they have been train on extensive language models, the chatbots can react human-like.
