Misinformation is a major issue online today, and messaging platforms are no exception, as now.
WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will enable WhatsApp Web users to reverse search images using Google directly on WhatsApp Web.
For users, this will indicate whether the images they received are real or if it’s been manipulated. We are going to learn about this Reverse Image Search on WhatsApp feature in depth in this article.
Reverse Image Search on WhatsApp Web
To cut down on such misinformation spreading on the Internet, WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature.
That feature will enable users to perform a reverse image search of images using Google, right from WhatsApp Web.
WABetaInfo claims the feature is undergoing development and will be available to beta testers soon.
Authentication with Google’s Help:
According to the report, WhatsApp would allow users to authenticate the picture shared with them using Google. This new feature will tell the users whether the shared image has been edited, manipulated, or taken out of context.
No Download Required:
Users don’t really need to download the image to their desktop, as there will be a link that they will simply add to their desktop to begin the reverse image search in the WhatsApp Web application.
Powered by Google:
If the user decides to search for an image on the web, then on sending and selecting the said image to the web, WhatsApp will upload the same with the user’s consent and start reverse image search using the default browser.
The process of the entire reverse image search will be powered by Google, and it won’t allow WhatsApp to look at the content of the image.
Benefits for Users:

This feature will be beneficial for users in many ways:
Checking Misinformation: This feature will enable users to check misinformation that is being spread online.
Image Authentication: This would also enable users to validate if an image they received is real or fake.
Time-Saving: Users will no longer be forced to download and separately search images on Google.
Document Scanning on iOS
The introduction of a new in-app scanning feature has recently added the ability for WhatsApp to also scan documents on its iOS app.
In-App Scanning:
With the latest WhatsApp for iOS update (version 24.25.80), this new innovative functionality lets users scan documents directly inside the document-sharing menu.
This integration removes the need for external scanning devices, allowing for easier use for on-the-go users.
Simple and Efficient:
The idea of this new tool is to make WhatsApp a full communication and document exchange tool.
Once the document-sharing menu opens, users have an option they can choose to scan which will then activate your device’s camera.
Control and Adjustment:
Users can capture an image of a document, preview the scan, and make adjustments. Users still have full control to manually tweak margins and manually position the margins to the exact extent they desire, without the app having to detect the margins.
Conclusion
This is a good move by WhatsApp Web that would help in combating sharing online misinformation.
This will make the online experience more secure and reliable for its users. This feature is not yet available but is planned to be available to all users shortly.
