WhatsApp banned 22.3 million accounts in India in Q1 2024

WhatsApp took record-breaking action in India in the first three months (Jan-Mar) of this year (2024) and banned more than 2 crore 23 lakh accounts. This figure is double as compared to the first quarter of last year (2023).

Such a big action by WhatsApp on accounts indicates that online fraud and user security is becoming a big problem in India.

WhatsApp imposed these bans on the basis of user complaints, suspicious activities detected by its system and identification of accounts that violate Indian law or WhatsApp policies. Also, the instructions of the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) were also followed.

WhatsApp says that these bans were done under Rule 4(1)(d) and Rule 3A(7) of the “Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021” made by the Government of India in 2021.

WhatsApp Release their monthly Report regarding Ban Accounts

The same trend was seen in February as well. This month WhatsApp banned more than 76 lakh accounts, out of which more than 14 lakh accounts were already caught.

By March, this figure increased further. In March, WhatsApp banned about 80 lakh accounts, out of which more than 14 lakh were already activated.

The increasing bans every month and the effort to catch accounts on their own show that WhatsApp has become very strict to prevent misuse.
